The XPRIZE is moving on the the last part of testing, the Validation Testing. Combined Performance and Efficiency testing is now complete. The validation testing is an important part and carries 50% weight on the final result. So the winner is yet to be found. In the combined performance and efficiency testing (50 laps/100 miles)the results were as follows: 1. Team Li-Ion 2. RaceAbout 3. TW4XP 4. ZAP completed 48 laps (mechanical issues) 5. Aptera completed 18 laps. (mechanical issues) Penalities: Team Li-ion received 1 penalty for driving under 45 mph RaceAbout received 2 penalties for exceeding 70 mph TW4XP had 4 penalties for being under 45 mph Mileage Numbers Team Li-Ion 125 MPGe RaceAbout 100 MPGe TW4XP 138.9 MPGe This ends the testing-events at Michigan International Speedway. Next locations are Chrysler’s Chelsea Proving Grounds for two days of Coast Down testing and then Argonne National Lab facilities in Chicago for their final Validation tests. Who do you think will win in the alternative class? |

My heart is with TW4XP, but my money -- as a betting man -- is with Team Li-Ion. ZAP did not have mechanical issues -- this is incorrectly reported on the Progressive Automotive XP website. The 45 MPH penalties were assessed after comming out of the chicane, but there was no indication for the drivers of WHERE one had to be at 45 mph after the chicane. 70mph was the track speed limit for non-professional drivers... TW4XP was the only three-wheeler to complete all events, including the final "winner take all" race and completed with the highest MPGe (albiet this does have a strong correlation with our average speed). From the discharge graphs of the batteries from real-world testing, Berndt had told us that we could not carry enough energy in the batteries to go 100 miles at the top race speeds, so we finished 3 laps (about 11 minutes) after the 1st and 2nd place finishers. Bernd was spot-on with his maths too: our count was off and we did an extra lap (2 extra miles) and with about 1/4 of a mile remaining, the TW4XP shut down due to low energy. Wolfgang was able to get it restarted and then crossed the finish line. As a driver, Wolfgang did a very good job of respecting Bernd's "leash" and not racing -- I can only imagine the difficulties of being restrained as I *know* Wolfgang likes to race (he and Keven of Illuminati Motorworks did a race around the track on a final lap during a knockout event, with speeds above 70mph)! Commute suck? Twike it; You'll like it!
