Small E-Mobile or big bicycle?

I would like to show you the electrical assistet Alleweder.

What is it?

Basically it is a three wheel recumbent bike with fairing.
In Germany we call this type of bike a "Velomobil".
Even thougth is fairing greatly helps to improbe maximum speed, driving is not so much fun when it comes to hills. With a realistic total weight of 35-40 kg it has its home in the flat areas of the Neverlands.
In order to increase the possibilitey of this human powered vehicle the company akkurad (www.akkurad.com) added electric motors to this bicycle. Motors have a range from 250 W, mandatory pedaling and 25 km/h cutoff-speed (german "pedelec" legislation, without registration) to 500 or 600W Motors without any restrictions (registration valid only for Germany as lightweight 3-wheeled motorcycle to 45 km/h).
From now on i am only talking about the "high power"- versions.

Generally these version can be moved by human power only or electrical power only. By using both, you get more speed and/ oder more range. Basically range is "as far as you can pedle" plus pure electrical range, so real life range depends mostly on the driver. Because batteries are very light (a 3 kg battery is sufficiant to propell the vehicle), range is also a mater of how many batteries you take with you.

It is not a "closed cabin" system.
In good weather you sit quite open.
For bad weather there is a canvas that only your head sticks out and an small windshield and a small roof to protect your head. By adjusting windshield and roof you can reach the point, that there is close to no wind in your face, but you see the road with no glass in your way of sight.
Truely an all weather solution, if your head is not to sensive. But if you wear glasses, you might reach the point, that your glasses get fogged (happens to me maximum a few times a year...).

Luggage Compartment:
aprox. 65 l in the rear,
approx 2* 20 l beneat the driver.

There are two different versions:
Alleweder 4 with alluminium body and 24 V treadle Motor with 500 W

Alleweder 6 with gfk-body (still with a chassis out ouf alluminium) with a 600 Watt, 48 V wheel hub motor.

I am driving an Alleweder 4, but have has some test-km with an Alleweder 6.

Alleweder 4

Advantages:
Motor used gearshift, electrical suport very good as long as you have a sutible gear. The design of teh gearschift is up to the user, using the wide variety of bicycle components für gearshifts on the rear wheel.
Therefor "unlimited" Highspeed with full electric support, as the driver gets stronger.
Freewheeling for the motor

Disadvantages:
Motorpower runs over the whole drivetrain resulting in restrictions regarding maximum power and lifetime of the drivetrain.
No recuperation possible.
Necessety to use the gearshift even if going electrical only.

Alleweder 6:
Advantages:
Drivetrain independet wheelmotor, more power possible.
recuperation and electrical reverse gear.
gearshift only for pedaling.

Disadvantages:
low power and efficiancy ad low speed.
maximum speed for electrical assists (43 km/h at 48 V for the current motor)
a little resistance from the motor without free wheeling.

Range at "high" speed:
20 to 50 km per Battery (16Ah 24V oder 8 Ah 48V, 400 Wh), depending on your pedaling.
Electrical energy needed: usualy less than 1,5 kWh / 100 km

Is is a car?
No, not really.
But it can replace a car on many ways.
May 2008 i bought an Alleweder 4.
Till July 2009 i rode 9500 km with it, and then got rid of our secondary car.
My wife still has a car, but it is mainly hers...
As "fallback" i also have an old CityEl, but it is rather a project than a regulary means of trangsportation.
