Hello, there is an new EV in town. The NanoPW from Switzerland. ( http://www.nanopw.ch/ - teh URL Button is not working...) Sorry, website only in german. On the base of the velomobile GoOne - Evolution they build an true EV with 4kW power. Pedals are present, but due to the obvious quit inefficient Generator-system, the vendor only talks about "hometrainer" - function. But 4 kW should be more than sufficiant, to propel a small, only 90 kg (including battery for 80 km) heavy vehicle. Vendor only achived a "small motorcyle" licence up to 45 km/h. Prioce 14.500 €, "car" is only build after order. As most EV's, a little bit to expensive, but it should have an excellent energy efficency. Some quite inovative things like electronic (camera) "rearmirrors". I am sure it will find some customers, but with that price not to many. Alleweder 4

Thanks Yardonn, just curious: is the nanoPW built from scratch or is it based on the Alleweder? Regarding URL-button not working: This issue should be solved now. I had software installed on the server which prevented smilies and forum buttons from working properly. ecocarforum.com - Green Car Network

First i have to say that all my information is from the internet, no insider knowledge. It has nothing to to with the Alleweder, though the conzept is similar in some points. The NanoPW looks exaclty like the new variant of the GoOne - Velomobile, the GoOne - Evo ( http://www.go-one.de/ ). I know for longer that Mr Beyss (founder of GoOne-Production) tried several electric things (like using Generator and Motor instead of a chaindrive) with the GoOne. Last thing i knew was tha an Electric GoOne-Prototype with a 600 Watt Motor was build and testet. Also registered as a small motorcyle up to 45 km/h. But nothing was heared from that project for more than half a year. Now i have to make some guesses: The original E-GoOne was "unsellable", because its pedal-generator Satems was to ineffetive to be a bike, and the 600 Watt were to less to be an true EV. So neather "bikers" nor EV-Drivers would buy it. Changing to a 4000 Watt Motor is technically no big problem, and so they turned the Project form a bike to a EV. Now we have the perfect 1 Person all weather-conditions transporter. Physicaly there is not much room left, to build a more efficient microcar. But like all EV's build in small series, it's far to expensive compared with a car, and the luggage compartment is not big and (due to the airodynaic body) not cubic. In most US states there is now a special legal class of "non-motorized" yet motorized vehicle called a low-speed electric (or gas-blech!) bicycle. The requirements are that it has a 750 watt maximum (or for gas, 1hp) motor/engine, and that for a rider of 170 pounds it not go faster than 20 mph. Due to how the law is written, if you weigh less-than (or apparently more-than) 170 pounds, your speed is unlimited. They are legally considered a bicycle (no license, registration, emissions, etc) and the only restrictions in addition to the one above for my state (illinois) is that you have to be 16 years of age and you can't drive it on sidewalks (no mention of multi-use paths). Apparently the legislators did not consider adding gearing to the 750watt motor, or a weight-sensitive switch (so if you weigh exactly 170 pounds, you're limited to 20mph). When I looked at the Go-One, it did not have what I needed -- I needed 2-3 passengers and it did not strike me as durable enough to go all year (we've nasty pot holes in Illinois in the winter time)! I thought quite a long time over it, and in my opinion, the only way to transport one person efficient, is to use a 1-person vehicle. The necessary structural changes to add room and weight capacity for additional passangers makes the concept far to heavy and dammages the airodynamics... You can see this, if you compare Twike and NanoPW. OPf Course i do not forget that the twike is approx. 20 Years old, and has a much higher highspeed. But even taking that in account, it would be quit difficult, today to strip down this 2-Person concept in oder to reach the 90 kg per person weight of the NanoPW. The nanoPW has only a chance, if the think different. Of course it can not be a "Family-Car". You will still need access to a several-person transporter (witch will of course use much more energy...) But it is the perfect vehicle to reduce the milage of the family-transporter. But of course this ist today to expensive. This may change, when fuel (and electricity) is far more expensive than the cost of the Car... Then it may be economical to have a NanoPw (Or E-Alleweder *smile*) and a bigger car (Aptera, Van...) togehter. Alleweder 4

I just don't think that you can sell/market it -- even the most 'standard' one-person motorized vehicle (the motorcycle) has the 'option' -- no matter how uncomfortable it may be -- for a passenger. That 'bonus' room for a passenger gives you a bunch of flexibility for hauling stuff! Here's my rationale: The average household size in the US approaching 2.5 -- it's currently just under 2.6 but trending down, the average commute round trip (in 1990, for 50% of Americans -- I'll put money down we drive less today!) is 25 miles or less for 80% of us it's 50 miles or less. I don't have any numbers on this, but I'm betting the average speed is 35 mph or less - I know that it makes very little difference when I get to work in my 5 mile commute whether my top speed is 25 mph or 35/40 mph (due to stop signs, stop lights, etc -- I just get to the sign/light faster). What makes a huge difference? Keeping rolling. Things like MODERN roundabouts and yield signs would help tremendously in this regard -- done correctly, they can both slow traffic down AND keep it moving. Done incorrectly, you get Boston It's not that I don't think there shouldn't be an option for single-passenger (see Myers NmG, the Corbin Sparrow along with the E-Alleweder When you look at WHY people need to carry what they do when they commute (drop a kiddo off at daycare, pickup groceries on the way home, go out to lunch with a fellow co-worker) the second seat makes more and more sense. This is not to say I don't see a place and a justifiable need for a single passenger vehicle, I just don't see how it sells. Note that I'm coming from a VERY car-centric society in the US. Of course, today a single seater does not sell. (beeing totaly correct, this is not true, Akkurad sells aprox 25 per year... but of course this is realy nothing compared to other n....). The point is, that a two seater will proboably consume more than twice the energy of a single-seater, even if both are only equiped with one person. But as long as energy is cheap, this seams not to make a difference. But it will make a difference if energy becomes very expensive. Expensive fuel has already begun to make even the US citicans more sensitive to energy consuption of their means of transportation. This shift in priorties may lead to great changes in the future, but even i don't assume this to happen shortly... I to would love to have a twike, but i calculated it, and the cost per mile (includen Lithium-Batteries...) was just to high for me. It turned out to be more realistic to make "twike-ready-tours" with our diesel and to switch only for single passanger rides to an electric single seater.... Of course in my case there are quite a bit of trips, even a twike could not handle (range and payload...). The cost of the electric two-seaters are today so high, that they have economical the same problems as the single-seaters... And one thing is quite sure, the twike will keep its privileges as motorcyle, if there will become many of them on the road. There is nothing that justifies this status if you compare it with a smart, which is considere to be a car. If we beginn to build a significant number "3-Weeled Cars", i am sure legislation will be changed... Alleweder 4

And indeed my thought patterns are changing... like I said, in the United States you have a new class of non-motorized (yet it has a motor) vehicle -- the 'low speed' bicycle. The legal advantages to the manufacturer and the owner are VAST: It's a bicycle, so there would be no parking fees, no Tax/Title/License/Insurance. This is a HUGE savings. No helmet required, vehicle carrying capacity (passengers & hauling capacity) can be easily extended with a bicycle trailer (and be perfectly legal). One could imagine a design with S-n-S couplers that allowed you to lengthen the vehicle and add an extra seat for a passenger OR fold it for transit on a train. You could use the latest designed equipment without needing to get it DOT (department of transportation) certified (very expensive) so home-built LED headlights are back 'in play'. The legal requirements are that pedals have to be operable, the motor is limited to 750 watts max output (gearing is not mentioned) and if you're 170 pounds you're limited to 20 mph (unless you're using the pedals). No mention is made of a top speed if you're over (or under) 170 pounds (again, the legislation does not take into account gearing). Commute suck? Twike it; You'll like it!
