Burning waste or landfill?

Many countries burn their waste, others are mainly using landfills. Assuming you are using an up-to-date waste burning facility with sophisticated filter technologies, would it be superior to the landfill option in regard to hazards to the environment?

The information found from various sources are sometimes contradicting.

As far as I am aware the public sees burning the waste as the cleaner option (out of sight, out of mind principle). But is this really true?
