One of the more promising storage locations for CO2 are deep saline aquifers. It was thus interesting for me to come across some serious efforts being undertaken in this regard at CO2CRC Otway project. "New research on deep saline storage will soon be underway at the CO2CRC Otway Project, Australia’s only CO2 geosequestration research and demonstration facility. "The CO2CRC Otway Project has safely injected and stored over 65,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide two kilometres underground in a depleted gas field, demonstrating that stored carbon dioxide can be effectively monitored,” said Dr Peter Cook, Chief Executive of the Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC)."(Source: Power Plant CCS Blog) That's indeed nice to hear, that folks are actually doing the stuff instead of just talking; at the same time, this may not be proof enough. A 100 MW power plant emits close 1 million T of CO2 per year, so what they have done is for a size that is just a tenth of a small utility power plant. Worldwide, power plants emit about 10 billion T, that's way way above the small scale of the experiment. All the same, it is always nice to hear things happening on the ground. What are your thoughts on this? |
