The big boys of Germany are getting serious about carbon capture and storage. Well, that should not be surprising, because is pretty much an engineering area where German companies really excel. "Three German powerhouses announced a deal to jointly develop new processes for carbon dioxide capture in coal-fired power plants. Essen-based RWE Power, Ludwigshafen’s BASF, and the Linde Group in Munich are aiming to remove 90 percent of CO2 from combustion gas in power plants. The group plans to construct and operate a pilot facility at the lignite-fired power plant of RWE Power in Niederaussem to test new developments and solvents from BASF for the capture of CO2, also known as CO2 scrubbing." (Source: PowerPlantCCS Blog) In many a countries and among scientists, there is still a lot of skepticism (some of which is healthy in my opinion) about CCS. But with such large companies getting their feet into the game, it is quite likely that CCS might happen sooner than many people thought. What do you think? |
