How green is an electric car

OwningElectricCar Topic creator registered since: 16.01.2010 Posts: 21	I've been writing a web page that shows the carbon footprint of the UK national power grid, and shows the breakdown of sources for power. The data is updated every five minutes and I use it to show when the best time is to charge up an electric car. The carbon footprint of the UK grid can swing from as little as 275g/kWh to as much as 670g/kWh. The average figure is 537g/kWh. This figure takes into account not only the power station carbon footprint, but also the carbon footprint in the sourcing of the raw fuels (coal, gas, oil and so on) and the transmission losses from the power station to the household. Based on this, it is possible to work out the true carbon footprint of an electric car compared to any other car and I show this as a chart at the bottom of the page, using manufacturers claimed efficiencies for both electric car and combustion engine car, based on plugging an electric car in to charge at that precise moment in time. At the moment, the information is only for the UK. I'd love to find the raw data for other countries as well in due course. The DOE tracks and publishes for free tons of data for the U.S. I am a detail person myself so ... I care more about the specifics of a specific situation than I do to broad overviews ... But in a general overview... EVs have more green potential than any ICE or HEV. The Average EV is more green than the average ICE or HEV. 2000 MT Honda Insight MIMA & FAS equipped ...
