A big problem with e-cars as I see it is battery cost, weight and capacity. So why not share the energy load as much as possible on a common power grid on major routes, and use smaller, lighter, and cheaper batteries to commute slowly to and from the main grid. Then you could charge on the grid whilst driving at transit speeds with good night lights and air conditioning etc from a shared, but much more powerful energy source. You would also save significantly on the 20 odd % overcharge needed by the batteries. Grid power charges are easily handled by a smart meter and ecard for payment, or interactive ecard and dynamic on-route monitoring points. It's not rocket science, and the technology exists NOW to do it well. It won't suit everyone, but it will suit many, and will be more efficient use of GHG production than petrol &/or diesel even if we do keep coal power stations. The shared grid car is cheaper than the self contained source type, and has much greater range and speed potential. It can carry more payload too. It will only need a very modest kwhr storage, and still be able to go much further & faster than existing self-contained designs. Having less battery weight it will drive better & be safer too.
