A study carried out by the Swiss Association of Car Distributors (AGVS) has identified four different types of car drivers.
The results are very likely to be representative for other parts of Europe as well.

The four types of drivers:

The Pragmatists (29%)
They choose the transportation method acc. situation. Comfort and flexibility are important, can be achieved by public transport and/or bicycle. Do not think of themselves to be particularly environmental cautious, to benefit the environment not the cars have to change, but the flexibility how to use different transportation methods, e.g. car, train, bus.

The Environmentalists (27%)
This group uses mostly public transport. They think cars should be smaller and more efficient. Environmental protection is an important issue and has to be tackled by the society with high priority.

Comfort oriented (25%)
Comfort and costs are above all, climate protection is an important issue of our society, but it has no effect on their own habits.

Prestige oriented (19%)
Costs and environmental issues not important, to benefit the environment not habits have to change, but technology.

The result didn't surprise me and I think it's quite close to reality, at least here in Switzerland. I wonder what you think of the region where you come from. I bet some numbers are quite different! Or would you even add or deduct one group?

I think they missed:
The Geek group.

I also think allot of people fall partially into several different groups.

I also agree that some would fit into more than one category. The presented analysis is very simple and broken down into four main categories. Good enough for a short article in a newspaper that doesn't want to bother readers with details...
