I just joined the forum.

I've been looking around for transportation that minimizes or eliminates use of fossil fuels for a while now. My family owns 2 cars, both are old now. On average, both cars are simultaneously in use only one day per week. And most days one car is in use and is driven 15 miles or so for local trips. I'd like to find a good efficient commuter car (low speeds, moderate range, carry 2 or 3 people), and a car to be used on longer trips (high speeds, long range, 4 people with gear). The cost and limited selection of neighborhood electric vehicles has kept me from buying one for my local car; I keep waiting for a low-cost NEV that can climb hills. I would like an efficient trip car too, but think I will be limited to a more conventional fuel; the Prius is essentially an efficient ICE car on the highway (can I get one without an electric motor and batteries?).

Hmm, I see here are some of the informations I found missing in your other post ...

... have to think it over again ...

It is not possible to get the Prius without its electric components - those components are a part of the concept. I'm not very convinced, I drove a Prius (not the mk3, which is way better) for about two weeks. OK, the Prius is more efficient than the average car, but not in the extend it is commercialized ... We have in Germany some midsize Diesel powered cars with similar fuel consumption and better abilities when needing to carry stuff.

For myself I have decided not having a car - I will hire one if I need it - it will be not more than 6..9 times a year.

Hi Robert, welcome to the forums.
When replacing your cars, consider downsizing. This has a very positive effect on your wallet and the environment.
Just think about how far you wanna go with downsizing, what is still acceptable to you and your folks?

Once you have determined the size of the vehicle, try to optimize further by looking at vehicles powered with renewable energy.
One of the best options you have here is to buy an EV. Especially your 'local car' can be replaced relatively easily by an EV. I personally do not consider NEVs to be an alternative because of their limited application area. Unfortunately the range on available EV products is still very limited, but if you would like to drive electric, you can. And believe me, it feels great! icon_smile.gif
If buying a new one is not an option because of the high price, consider searching for a used one.
In your area, try to get in touch with the Seattle Electric Vehicle Association. http://www.seattleeva.org
I am sure they would help you to find a vehicle that suits your needs.
Another website listing a lot of used vehicles is http://www.evfinder.com

I wish you good luck finding replacements for your old cars. When switching to the electric drive, issues like service points and maintenance come up to.
Because repair centers might be limited, it can help if you have DIY skills. But again, I suggest you contact the local EV Association and you will be surprised how much insider knowledge there is.

Cheers, Stefan

Hi Johny25, welcome to the forums!
Members here are only interested in one thing: Electric Vehicles icon_smile.gif
So what is the most sexy electric car then in your opinion?
