Hello, I am glad to find this forum, and I'm looking forward to learning more about electric and other very efficient cars. I've been working on a design, and so far I have a 1/24th scale wood model, a 3D SketchUp model, and 2D CAD drawings. I was able to be at the X-Prize Knockout Round, and seeing all those efficient cars, some of them built by people a lot like me -- and with the apparent immanent demise of the Aptera; I've designed a car I've named CarBEN EV. You can see rendered images, and 2D drawings and an animated video of CarBEN EV on my blog: http://neilblanchard.blogspot.com/2010/09/carben-ev-open-source-project-part-3.html I designed it for my situation, with 5 seats, and it will fit people my height (6'-4" It is an open source design, so if you want me to email you a copy of the 3D model, and/or the 2D CAD drawings, I'd be happy to! Sincerely, Neil [This article was edited 1 times, at last 03.12.2010 at 19:39.] |

Hi Neil and welcome to the forums, A very interesting project you have! Congratulations to what you have achieved so far. I was studying the drawings a little bit and I find the seating arrangements very innovative. The mia electric car follows a similar path. It sounds convincing to me that a single entry design provides many benefits e.g. passive safety. On the other hand occupants might feel trapped in case of an accident as there is only one way to leave the car. Would maybe an emergency exit in the front be a possible solution? |

Yes, there would be at least the side windows as emergency exits, and/or a roof hatch above the driver's head similar to what a school bus has. I've been working on section drawings in DataCAD, and these will be used to produce the body shell. I'm wrestling with the best way to actually do this. I keep coming back to something related to what a friend of mine is doing -- he is building an airplane in his basement, fabricating the ribs from sheet aluminum (6061-T6) with plywood formers that have been cut on a bandsaw, and hammering the flanges with a soft mallet. I would have to figure out how to do a fiberglass skin -- probably will foam panels glued and carved to support the glass. Sincerely, Neil |
