Hello eco-car enthusiasts, On my way home from work I saw for the first time a hybrid bus. I didn't even know they exist! Unfortunately I was boarding another bus and therefore I can't tell you what it is like to be a passenger on it. But who knows, one day it might operate on my line.. At home I did a bit of research and found out that the bus is manufactured in Poland using an Allison Transmission power train system. The company producing these buses is named 'Solaris'. You can find their website at: http://www1.solarisbus.pl/en/hybrid,characteristic.html The bus is called 'Urbino 18 Hybrid'. The company says it reduces emissions as follows: * NO2 emission up to 39% lower, * particulates emission up to 97% lower, * CO emission up to 90% lower, * hydrocarbon compounds emission up to 90% lower, * lower total CO2 emission. This is likely to be a best case scenario. A critical article about the efficiency of hybrid buses can be found here: http://www.hybridcenter.org/hybrid-transit-buses.html Whatever the gain in efficiency, I find its a step into the right direction. Unless buses continue to grow bigger and heavier like cars in the last few yeas did... |
