Hi,

When booking a plane ticket to this month's United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, there is a small button that offers the chance to "offset" the carbon dioxide emissions appears.

According to Easyjet, it will cost £1 each way to make the necessary reduction in emissions elsewhere. But where does that money go?

I just wanted to know what everyone’s opinion was in regarding to the motoring industry and the proposals of carbon offsetting with cars. Many are unsure, and some businesses are hoping world leaders will take steps to reform the industry.

Pros/Cons, what do people think?

Cheers,

David.

The carbon offsetting money goes to fund carbon reducing / negative activities... things like renewable energy ... recycling ... etc...

Of course any company / organization has some over head... so you never get 100% of your money to the cause... but the more % that gets there the better.

I think voluntary carbon offsetting is great.

Although I would generally say that a better net result comes from direct benefits ... like bicycling more ... buying solar panel for your own house... etc...

But if someone already does those things ... carbon offsetting is one more thing they can do to go even further.

If it is between someone doing offsetting or doing nothing offsetting is better.
