The father and inventor of the Smart, Ncolas Hayek, gets a delayed gratification: Daimler, maker of the SMART, will launch a car-sharing service. Launch city will be Ulm in Germany. iinitially 50 Smart Fortwos will be parked all over the city. The system works similar to the Zipcar or City CarShare services. Access to the vehicles will be provided via an RFID chip attached to the drivers licence. Car users will pay 19 cents per minute and bookings can be made online. Hiring on the spot is also possible by touching their tagged drivers licence to a sensor on the vehicle. Daimler claims that hiring a car becomes as easy as using a mobile phone. At the moment only Daimler employees can use the service. But the company plans to make the service available to the poublic in early 2009. Do you think the plan will succeed? I also see a possibility that in the future E-Smarts will be utilized for this service. Then Mr Hayek would be even more happy. Because thats how he initially planned the SMART to be. |

News leaked thru today that Daimler is considering to put 2000 electric Smarts into the capital of France (Paris). Paris has already a similar system in place for bicycle use. If it works for 2-wheelers, why shouldn't it work for the Smarts? |
