Could someone tell me what the actual status about low-sulfur diesel in the United States is? From what I know, diesels are still restricted and importing a diesel car such as the Smart took years and modifications were necessary. Is the the US diesel fuel different from the European?

There are a number of new cars coming onto the market with very efficient diesel engine technology (160 MPG+) and I wonder if they will have chance in the US??

Yes diesels already exist in the USA and make up between 1 and 4 % of all passenger cars there. This will increase in the near future while the wait for hybrids and E vehicles continues.

Latest cars from Mercedes and Audi will surpass even teh Califonian EPA laws. VW have bluemotion cars coming out soon as well.

The key is a combination of Diesel oxidation cat, Particulate filter, AdBlue (Urea - waste product from agriculture) exhaust injection, and DeNOx converter. The Ad Blue tank is filled every longlife service (20,000 miles is possible).

This means even an Audi A4 will meet Euro 2014 emissions regs way beter than Euro5.

NOx is down 90%, and particulates almost zero.

USA has a head start with bio diesel and one hopes they will continue to develop algae bio fuel that could be the answer to dirty coal fired power stations.

Trouble is the recent concentration on Ethanol which is 30 % less efficient than normal petrol /gasoline and requires special stainless storage and fuel lines.

Hello ecojet and welcome to the forums!

Thanks for the background info reg. diesel cars in the US. Its encouraging to hear all these good news! I haven't been to the US for some years now and I remember having seen mostly gas stations selling regular petrol only. How difficult is it to find a station selling diesel for these new cars? Is truck diesel fuel suitable for these modern passenger cars?
