Hey guys. This is a bit of a random but just curious to know what everyone thinks. With the amount of hybrids and electric vehicles going up I just wondered what everyone thought of this - Plans have been made to install the worlds first fully-connected recharging infrastructure for pure electric and plug-in electric hybrid vehicles in the UK. "VINCI Energies United Kingdom and Elektromotive have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to deploy a fully operational infrastructure in the UK, http://www.autoebid.com/autoenews/newsAEBSingle.asp?artID=2179#When:2009-12-14 capable of charging electric vehicles whenever they are stationary at home, in public car parks, at the kerbside and at the workplace. The number of Elektrobay charging stations will increase significantly in the UK during 2010, coinciding with the arrival of affordable, mass-produced electric vehicles launched by a range of mainstream car manufacturers. Elektromotive first introduced the Elektrobay in Westminster, London in 2006. There are now more than 250 Elektrobays in operation in the UK, and is considered the worlds most advanced charging station for electric vehicles." Now, admittedly, I do not own a hybrid, but still have NEVER seen one of these stations and thought they were more a vision of the future than the present. Has anyone with a hybrid/electric used one of these? How long do they take to fill/charge/whatever they do? Any other thoughts? Are we all slowly being moved over into the hybrid market? Oh, your link is broken: http://www.autoebid.com/autoenews/newsAEBSingle.asp?artID=2179#When:2009-12-14 An appropriately-sized electric vehicle can charge on household current/mains/outlets/plugins and don't need special hookups like the ones here. Keeping this design requirement in mind, there are more places to charge your EV than fill a petrol-burner. If, for example, you're in the US (a very car-centric society), chances are your family owns two (or more) motor vehicles. Chances are also good that you travel less-than 25 miles a day. And that there are less-than 3 people in your family. And that the typical commute to work is done in one person per car (the driver). And that the typical vehicle that is driven is 2,000+ pounds to deliver 100-300 pounds and can carry 4-5 passengers for 300 miles or so between fill-ups. There is a reason why REDUCE comes first in the 'reduce, reuse, recycle' mantra -- it's truly the most important. If you reduce the size & weight of the vehicle to the correct size for the application, you get a 1-2 (perhaps 3) passenger vehicle. This weight/size reduction allows you to have a smaller/lighter battery pack such that it can recharge off of most standard household outlets in a reasonable "long lunch/teatime" ...like Das Twike Commute suck? Twike it; You'll like it!
