Dear all, To all of you a happy new Year 2010 and lots of (renewable) energy. The Green Car Network has seen an interesting last year with many new members who have joined us. A warm welcome to all. Unfortunately it has also been a year with many spam attacks. I am planning to make a few changes to the site this year, which will help to prevent more spam. If you come across such posts, please do not hesitate to report it. There will be again plenty of news to be discussed this year. If promises are held, we will see the introduction of the first EVs by mainstream manufacturers. While this is generally good news, the introduction is unlikely to be smooth for owners as well as dealers/producers. The first EV generation by majors will have a difficult stand if structure and body are simply taken over from conventional cars using gasoline. One of the main problems for a successful introduction in my opinion is not the battery technology, but the vehicle weight. A Mini E for example has a weight of 3230 lbs or about 1500kgs. After 100 miles the car needs to be recharged. With lots of energy. With cheap and dirty electrical power, this might be affordable. With renewable power, the picture looks different. It seems that the industry has realized the potential of electric mobility. But the way this subject is implemented is highly questionable. No wonder buyers are unhappy after they realize that in winter the range is even further reduced. So what do they do to increase range? They drive slower...something to think about for the manufacturers. 150kw, 220Nm and 3230lbs just to go to work and visit my grandma? The battery pack would be a lot cheaper and the car too if you cut those numbers in two. Not to mention the charging time... Then I would maybe consider even buying one, until then I will take the train or bus. Unfortunately it must be said that todays EVs are mostly build for the car shows and race tracks but not for reality. While the situation is far from satisfactory for the environment, the current situation could be beneficial for producers of alternative vehicles. Should you consider to invest into a greener vehicle, be aware that there are alternatives. They might not offer the same sofa like seats like the average car, but on the other hand they can make driving again to be fun. An electrifying 2010 wishes you, Stefan |
