Liberty Cars is launching electrically powered luxury 4x4 cars based on the British brands the Range Rover and Land Rover Defender platform. Their website is under construction but should be up within the next few months. http://www.Liberty-eCars.com Nano-technology batteries will be used and cars are available as all-electric versions only (Range 150 miles) or with Range Extender (Range 300 miles). I fully support going electric but I do have some problems with statements that these cars are 'zero-emission' vehicles....If they are charged with renewable energy coming for instance from windfarms, they are close to zero emission vehicles, but in reality many countries (incl. UK) are far away from having enough renewable energy to power our cars on the road. And I fear that many people driving these cars will use electricity generated from coal or fossil fuel power stations... I sometimes wonder whether cars like an electric Land Rover actually do some good to the image of the electric car... |

REDUCE reuse recycle. For the US (I'm sure a big target market for this vehicle) this violates the first 'rule' of the green mantra. It does nothing for congestion, something I wonder about in London... why should an electric/hybrid vehicle get out of the congestion charge, if in fact there's only one person in it and it's a SUV/miniVan/5-seater? The embodied energy (the amount of energy it takes to actually -make- the thing) is still incredibly high. It's still dangerous to pedestrians and in sharp-turn roll-over situations (unless they use the batteries to drop the center of gravity). I have a strong desire to call it 'greenwashing'... Still, if you're gonna have an SUV... we're still seeing super-stretch SUV Limo's driving around in cities here... imagine if they were electric. M@ Commute suck? Twike it; You'll like it!

It is a pure form of greenwashing a whole industry branch: "Hey, great, we can go on as we did before, because it's great when our 20 l/100 km SUV uses only 10 l gasoline equivalent/100 km when driving electrically!" Hello all, You might have seen that it is now possible to sell/buy eco-friendly vehicles in our Classified Section. To avoid cars like those made by Liberty Cars, I've set certain limits and requirements a car must fulfill to be accepted in the classifieds. E.g. the car should not weigh more than 3300lbs or 1500kg. I hope that keeps 'kWh-guzzling' cars away from the site. Cheers, Stefan |
