Mitsubishi has released an new release date (2009) for its all electric coupe. The car is powered by lithium ion batteries. Here some specs:

Overall length: 3,450 mm
Overall width 1,600 mm
Seating capacity: 2 + 2
Motors Permanent magnetic synchronous motors
Front: In-wheel motors
Rear: Single motor
Max. output Front: 20kW; Rear: 47kW
Max. Speed 180km/h
Range: 200km

The car features photovoltaic panels on the roof to extend its range. A power generating fan is incorporated in the front grille.

I wonder to what extent the solar panel and the front grille will help to extend the range...? icon_rolleyes.gif

Here some news from Mitsubishi about the i-MiEV:

NEW! Potential buyers of the car can register their interest on their website:
(For the time beiing only for UK)

http://www.mitsubishi-cars.co.uk/futuremodels/index.asp

The projected range of the vehicle has been corrected to a more realistic 160km (100 miles) instead of the previously announced 200km.

I hope the announcement of the i-MiEV is real and the car will make it onto our streets. The more people register the more likely the car will be put into production...So, why not giving it a try! Registration is free...

I can't wait for these to become available in the USA. They have already moved their date for releasing them up 1 year. It must be looking very good.

This is the i-MiEV newsletter I've got today from Mitsubishi:

Thank you for registering to receive updates about the revolutionary new Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric car (Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle). Here is a final roundup of the latest information about the car, including links to press articles that have already added to the anticipation surrounding the i-MiEV.

Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation have created a joint venture with GS Yuasa Corporation to accelerate the development and production of lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion is the essential ingredient that marks the i-MiEV's electrical powertrain out from the established hybrid competition, which use older, less efficient battery technology.

On the announcement of the joint venture, Jim Tyrrell, of Mitsubishi Motors UK commented: “the development and production of next-generation fuel sources is essential for the car industry as a whole and for Mitsubishi to lead the way exemplifies our commitment to new green technology”.

The i-MiEV is due for launch in the UK by 2010, but we just couldn’t wait, so the i-MiEV Sport concept car was specially flown over from Japan to be exhibited in the Technology Pavilion at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, and sure enough it got a rapturous reception from the press and visitors alike.

Well that's interesting! Looks like Mitsubishi is trying to get a jump on the competition by planning to release an electric car in 2009 when everyone else has 2010 targeted.

I wish them luck, altho the nonsense about a propeller behind the grille to provide extra power does cause me to doubt that they have a plan fully worked out. As many or most of you know, the drag on a propeller would cause the car to lose more speed than would be gained by the electricity generated by the spinning propeller. The idea of perpetual motion is *so* attractive... too bad it can't work.

It really seem sthat Mitsubishi wants to get a go at beeing one of the first automakers offering a mass-produced EV...I hope it will work out for them.

The I-MiEV is planned to be introduced in Japan in summer 2009. Also high on the list is New Zealand as one of the countries to see the first production version.

To pass US safety- and equipment standards, the right-hand drive I-MiEV would have to be slightly modified. According David Patterson, senior manager of regulatory affairs and certification, Mitsubishi Research and Design America, the company is looking seriously at this option.

Mitsubishi has plans to sell approximately 2000 cars alone on Japan and about 200 in the UK in 2009.
