Hello all.

Today I had the chance to ride the first time an electric bicycle. They are around for a while now, but I never took the time to testride one icon_smile.gif

It was great. The bike is about 24kgs which is almost double a normal bike, but riding it you don't feel the weight at all.
Steep hills are no longer a problem, the range is more than 50 miles. Amazing.
Great for the daily commute, while keeping you fit.

I was asking the sales person what the restrictions are regarding charging. On my Lithium-Ion TWIKE, it is advisable not to keep the vehicle parked for a prolonged time with a full charge as this would have an effect on the battery life. Draining the battery completely should also be avoided as this destroys the cells. A warning lamp indicates that I need to recharge again.

The bicycle has a built-in limiter, which shuts the electric motor off, in case the battery charge reaches a certain level. The good thing is, you can still get to your destination using your muscle power! icon_biggrin.gif

I could imagine that many people charge their bicycles after use and might leave them fully charged for days. Doesn't this do some harm to the batteries? Anybody knows more? Does it depend on the battery type (LiPo, LiFePO4, LiMn..)?

Cheers,

I've greatly enjoyed my electric assisted bicycle... of course it is not weather protected ... So I only take it out in nice weather.

as for the batteries.

Different battery chemistries are more tollerant of certain kinds of abuse than other chemistries are.

It all depends on the application ... which battery pros and cons will end up working better for you in a given application.

If you would like me to go on and on in much much greater detail... I'd be happy to... Rechargeable batteries are one of my hobbies / personal interests.

I figured ... I would give the basic answer first ... in that yes different chemistries are more tollerant of different kinds of abuse than other chemistries are... then I figured if you want the extra detail ... you can let me know.
