Thanks for that eyecatcher, Lensman icon_smile.gif A feast for the eyes.

I read somewhere that more about the Model S will be revealed at the Geneva Motorshow in spring 2009. But lets hope the credit crunch will not hurt too much and keeps the TM wheels turning...

Here's an an updated one:

Tesla states that deliveries will start 2012. Reservations are taken on the basis of a refundable reservation fee of $5000.

The main specs:

RANGE
• Up to 300 mile range
• 45 minute QuickCharge
• Charges from 120V, 240V or 480V
• 5 minute battery swap Base Price $49,900* or €89'000 Euros.

UTILITY
• Seating for 7 people
• Unique hatch for oversized items
• 60/40 flat-folding rear seat
• 2nd trunk under hood

PERFORMANCE & TECHNOLOGY
• 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds
• PURE electric
• 2X as effcient as hybrids
• Proven powertrain from leading EV manufacturer
• 17 inch infotainment touchscreen

I'm a bit wary about the price. $50'000 sounds pretty agressive, but I like the design and the fact that it seats 7 people. How realistic is the 45 minute quick charge?

45 min quick charge has been 100% doable for several years... the issue with vehicular batteries that offer a 300 mile range is the magnitude of the electrical interface that would be needed for such quick charging.

If the type S gets 4 miles per kwh that is at least a minimum of a 75kwh battery pack.... forgetting for a moment the less than ideal real world were chargers / batteries and such have losses and are not 100% efficient ... that is still over 100 kw electrical rate... even if you have a 480V charging outlet , you would still be pulling over 210 Amps.

So I say it should not be a problem for modern batteries and BMS... but the problem is where you will get that much electricity that fast... allot of houses don't use more than a 10 kw rate for the whole house ... your talking about an electrical rate greater than the mains hook up for 10 houses all combined into one plug , that is easy and safe for Joe public to use ...

Short answer, yes they are taking reservations. Signature Series S (more expensive) due out the end of 2011, standard model S due out in 2012. Wait-order preference given to Roadster owners (and their frineds).
