Martin Eberhard, owner of a Tesla Roadster, is reporting that his Tesla is using a lot more energy than he initially thought. 22% of the stored energy in the Li-Ion batteries are used by a continuously running coolant pump. The pump also runs when the car is parked and completely off. The amount of energy used by ths pump amounts to a whopping 1278 kWh per year. About as much as two big refrigerators. Tesla Motors said that the pump should turn off once the battery is half-way discharged, and the car is off, and the ESS is cool. Not on Martin's car though. I guess this pump could be turned off by installing a circuit resp. a heat sensor. But what about warranty? Apparently drivetrain 1.5 will also not correct the problem... |

The way I read Martin's blog, the pump does turn off when the battery is half drained, but *only* at that point, never before. And he's had the Tesla Motors shop look at it more than once, and has been told this is "normal". Not only is this wasting electricity, and therefore money, it's also wearing out the battery pack faster than it should. I'm astonished Tesla Motors is treating this like "A feature, not a bug", as the computer industry puts it. This is giving Tesla a big "black eye" of negative publicity, and I predict they will be forced to do a recall to fix the problem. |
