Do we need the Tesla Roadster?

I, personally, have no use for a $100,000 high-performance sports car, regardless of whether or not it's electric. Even if I had that kind of money, I'd spend it on something else-- like putting solar panels on my roof. But the Tesla Roadster has single-handedly turned around perception by the public and-- more importantly-- the auto industry. It is now perceived that building and selling an electric car to the mass public is not only possible, but inevitable. So in *that* respect, the Tesla Roadster is very much "needed" by everyone who drives a car! GM is now, by all reports, serious about producing a serial hybrid car, the "Volt", and that decision can be directly traced to the favorable public reception of the Tesla Roadster. So that alone proves Tesla is a success, from the standpoint of starting to wean the U.S. from dependence on foreign oil, and reducing pollution.
