Hi,

Thanks Frank for this update. I already started to get worried about the Th!nk as I was unable to find any news about the launch of the car. The links you posted are very interesting reading material. If you can't read german, then at least you get a glimpse of what the factory looks like (third link on bottom). And it seems the project is very much alive!

The only concern I have are the battery has to be kept at 300°C if you want to avoid that it cools off. It says in the article that you need to drive at least 60km/35miles a day to run the car efficiently. Ideal for commuting but less attractive for occasional drives, reducing the number of potential customers.
The price might also have an impact on the numbers sold. A detailed price comparison to a small petrol/diesel car would certainly be interesting...

Despite this shortcoming, I still give it a good chance on the market. The car looks ok, offers enough range, accelerates nicely and the battery can be leased (peace of mind for the owner).

I wrote some months ago to one of the project leaders about the fact that the battery runs at 300°C and the need to keep it at this temperature when not used. Here is what he said:

Stefan,

The new TH!NK city is currently only available for sale in Norway, which
is why the configurator is "missing" on the English language site.

The UK and Switzerland will be among the first international markets,
but I am not able to confirm launch dates or partners there yet. Such
information will be posted on the web page when available. Further
questions can be directed to our Sales and Aftermarket Director, Richard
Waitz. He can be reached on rwa@think.no.

You are correct that the Zebra battery is a warm battery, operating at
around 300 C. It is encased in an insulated thermos, however, and heat
loss is minimal. The TH!NK city can be parked off-plug overnight (or
for several days) without requiring any battery warming before start up.
If parked off-plug for several weeks, the battery will "freeze" and need
to be heated up before driving.

Regards,
Michael Eimstad

Top or flop? What is your rating for the Th!nk?

I guess it's OK - as they'll jump on the Li-Ion train before it reaches the market in Germany. icon_wink.gif

BTW: The Zebra battery is also used in the trucks of Smith Electric Vehicles, namely the "Smith Newton Range":

http://www.smithelectricvehicles.com/products.asp?p=NT

And a study of the Swiss "Twikeklub" showed that a Zebra battery in a Twike would need a driving range of more than 5000 km per year in order to cross the barrier of "standby consumtion equals consumption for driving".

This means that you would have to use a Twike for at least 10000 km per year to not waste that much standby energy...

Read the study (PDF, German):

The Think now has an homologation for Europe.
So it can be sold in any european country.

Seems an important step they took.

Hi,

from what I remember reading last year, Think will not enter the German market anytime soon. They see other markets as better (= more promising) to invest their marketing money in.

The Germans are really way too speed and performance hungry! As a German I guess I'm allowed to say that. icon_wink.gif
