Is there an pedal only version of the Twike ? I live real close to work I am looking for a cheap 2 place (to drop my daughter at school) closed vehicle. I really love the look of the Twike but I don't need the batteries and the motor.

Hi Miraculor,

There isn't. Only the first Twike (Twike I) shown at the Expo in Vancouver in 1986, was such a vehicle without electric motor. It remained a prototype but was developed further and and engine was added plus all the accessories to make it street legal.
What you are looking for is probably a 'Velomobile' like the Go-One. http://www.go-one.us/
But usually these vehicles are for single occupancy only.

Thanks for the information ecoadmin.

Can you drive the Twike with no power left in the batteries ? I thinking of buying a used Twike and removing the batteries. My problem is that I don't think the Twike is street legal as a car or motor assisted bike in Quebec.

It's too heavy to be driven by muscle power only. Basic empty weight is around 240kgs. On a flat road you are able to keep the speed at around 20km/h, but it's almost impossible to start driving from a standstill.

About driving the Twike in Canada, I suggest you get in touch with the Manufacturer in Germany, http://www.twike.com
or with someone from the US or Canada who is driving a Twike. There are a few US Twike owners, some are also active in this forum, not sure though if they can help you with legal issues in Canada. Ther is also a Twike Canada Website, although it is not maintained anymore. You may wanna try to contact them anyway....

I wonder how light the Twike could get stripped down to?

I thought the ~246 kg was including batteries , Motor, etc.

I don't know the weight of the EV components.

Maybe keep a small lightweight battery to run things like headlights and turn signals.

I know in some countries they use pedal cabs ... those have one person doing the pedaling for 2 passengers , although I don't think those are fully enclosed ... only partially enclosed.

The 240-250 kgs includes motor and everything. But it's a basic Twike without carpets, CD player, acrylic windshield, interior light, standard battery, etc...
In Germany Twike's must have a windshield from car safety glass which adds additional safety but also weight. Newly delivered Twikes are around 280-320 kgs depending on installed equipment. The battery itself is about 40-90 kgs, and offers therefore the biggest potential for weight (and range) reduction.
