Hello, I would like to start a discussion about the energy consumption of EV's in particular and what it means in regard to CO2 emissions. As we all know, the ideal EV takes its power from renewable sources, but not all countries are gifted with plenty of sunshine, high winds or energy from hydroelectric power stations. Many countries produce their electricity by burning fossil fuel(Coal, Crude Oil, Gas). Assuming that my electric vehicle consumes 12kWh/100km or 12kWh/62miles or approximately 1.5liter/100km(62miles), what would be my CO2 emissions if the electricity is produced by burning fossil fuels? ecocarforum.com - Green Car Network

According an internet resource, the Longannet power station (coal) in Scotland produced 902 grams of CO2 per kWh in year 2000. 12x 902gr = 10'824 gr / 100km if I recharge my electric car using a coal fired power station. This assumes a that I use 12kWh/100km or 62 miles in my EV. A Toyota Prius emits 104gr CO2/km. 100km x 104gr = 10'400gr. That amounts to the same amount of CO2. Am I doing something wrong here? Can it be that the above mentioned power station is that dirty? Would I achieve lower CO2 emissions by burning diesel/petrol instead of coal to produce electricity? I know renewable energy is the way forward, but I just wonder what if... Any expert knowledge welcome... ecocarforum.com - Green Car Network
