I am currently reading the book "The last oil shock" (ISBN-13: 978-0719564239) written by David Strahan. What an eye-opener! The book covers the technical aspects of oil production, political relations and possible scenarios when production of oil peaks.

I've never known much about the oil business, but this book explains in an easy to understand way how much reserves there are and how to interpret them.

It surprises me though that the issue is not discussed more. David Strahan touches this issue as well and thinks that environmental campaigners often avoid the problem, because its easier to target the opposition without 'Peak Oil'. In a way 'Peak Oil' is like a competitor to the efforts of environmental campaigners because when the day of Peak Oil arrives, it is assumed that the price of oil will shoot up and therefore consumption/pollution will be reduced.

Whether discussed much in public or not, this book is highly recommended reading. Our wealth is almost entirely built on oil. If the black gold runs short, our life will definitely change. How big the impact will be is still to bee seen.

Will it be the final boost for a new way of transport. Will it be the breakthrough for electric or alternatively powered cars?

I am curious what you all think.

Thanks for this book recommendation. I've been doing some research on the issue as well and read some eye-opening facts. If you do a search on the internet, you'll find plenty of information and references to the subject.

I agree with you that the subject is not getting enough attention. We use oil as there would be no tomorrow! Many politicians know about it, but its not a popular subject. If taken seriously it would mean to cut back on oil use quickly. The consequence would be that the way we live would have to change (going green...) and you do not win any votes by campaigning for it.

Hi everyone!

Thanks for sharing ideas about Peak Oil and also for the book recommendation. I have also read some tips on how to save on fuel; you won’t just do Mother Earth a favor but also your pockets will breathe a huge sigh of relief.
