Electric car company Tesla Motors Inc. late Wednesday named Ze'ev Drori chief executive. Drori founded Sunnyvale-based semiconductor chip maker Monolithic Memories Inc. in 1969, sold it to Sunnyvale-based Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NYSE:AMD) in 1987, and then launched a car accessory company. In a prepared statement, San Carlos-based Tesla's chairman and investor Elon Musk said "Advancing our leading electric drivetrain technology is critical, but, above all, the Tesla CEO must be someone who will ensure that the products we deliver to customers are outstanding." Co-founder Martin Eberhard stepped down from the CEO spot earlier this year to concentrate on technology and development. In September Tesla said it will deliver its first all-electric sports cars in the first quarter of 2008. The company had said earlier it hoped to roll the cars out before the end of the year, but confirmed it will deliver 50 of its $98,000 all-electric Roadsters in the first quarter, and 650 in all during the year. The company is reportedly still conducting durability and reliability tests. To get on its waiting list, potential buyers must pay $5,000, with $4,950 refundable if a car isn't purchased.
