The location and final investment amount haven't been determined, he said. Incentives offered by California and a desire to stay close to suppliers prompted Tesla to choose its home state for production of the White Star model, Siry said. Tesla had said in February 2007 it would make the sedan at a $35 million factory in Albuquerque, New Mexico. "New Mexico made an excellent offer, but California's was better," he said. "One of the key conclusions was to challenge the merits of locating the plant and the program so far from our R&D and engineering teams in the Bay Area," Drori wrote. Ultimately, he said, the plant will be located "as close to our headquarters as possible." Tesla Chairman Elon Musk wrote in an e-mail to the San Francisco Business Times that the factory will be in the San Francisco Bay Area.
